Academic Support Services

The primary function of the Office of Academic Student Support Services is to provide assistance to students in their pursuit of academic success. The office oversees four primary tasks:

  • Assisting students with disabilities
  • Providing tutorial services in academic areas needed by students
  • Student Success Workshops
  • Peer Mentoring

One of the primary functions is to determine eligibility and assist with the implementation of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities attending Thomas More College. Founded in the thinking that all students should be assured equal access and opportunity, ASSS works to eliminate physical, instructional and attitudinal obstacles by providing reasonable accommodations. By collaborating with and empowering students who have disabilities we work to coordinate services and programs that enable equal access to an education and an overall college experience.

The Thomas More Tutoring Center has been established to provide academic assistance to students who, for a variety of reasons, are experiencing academic difficulty. Set up as an individualized process, the tutor/student relationship is designed to improve academic success by utilizing success oriented strategies in an atmosphere conducive to the promotion of educational success.

Student Success Workshops are small interactive activities that cover basic academic skills to benefit any student. The workshops are scheduled throughout each semester and cover topics relating to: Time Management, Study Skills, Learning Styles and Note Taking, and Stress Management. The one hour sessions cover ideas and techniques that can be implemented on an individual basis in an attempt to assist the student and their unique on campus experience.

Peer Mentoring is a concept designed to increase student awareness and success as they relate to campus activities. The program pairs students in order to assist with activities related to academic success that fall outside the guidelines of tutoring. Concepts like time management, organization and test preparation have been the most common uses of this program.

Please do not hesitate to contact the office if you have questions. We look forward to making your experience more accessible!
